The Omni Bedford Springs Resort

Work took me to Bedford, out in rural Pennsylvania, where everything sits a good hour's drive from everything else. The base for it was the Omni Bedford Springs, and it turned out to be a genuine piece of history: a National Historic Landmark that has taken guests since 1806, with thirteen US presidents through its doors over the years.

The bit that stuck with me was the pool. It is spring-fed, reckoned to be one of the first indoor pools built in the country, and they drain and refill it from the local springs every single day. Grand and a little old-fashioned, in the way these places should be.

Not somewhere you pass through by accident. But if you are ever out this way, it is worth the detour.
